Elevating Literacy Through the Arts: The Transformative Impact of LEAP
Integrating creativity, communication, and academic growth in New York City classrooms
In classrooms across New York City, students are engaging with literacy in new and meaningful ways—through movement, performance, and artistic expression.
With the support of the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation, Learning Through an Expanded Arts Program, Inc. (LEAP) continues to deliver a dynamic, arts-integrated literacy model that strengthens core academic skills while fostering confidence, collaboration, and communication.
🎨 A Multi-Sensory Approach to Literacy
LEAP Literacy combines theater, visual arts, music, and movement with traditional reading and writing instruction. Grounded in the principle that students learn most effectively through active engagement, the program incorporates discussion, interactive read-alouds, and project-based learning to deepen comprehension and retention.
Rather than approaching literacy as a passive activity, students are encouraged to:
Interpret and express ideas through performance
Collaborate with peers in creative exploration
Apply vocabulary and language skills in real-time contexts
Each residency culminates in a student-led performance or exhibit, providing an opportunity to demonstrate growth while engaging families and school communities.
📚 Measurable Impact Across Classrooms
During the fiscal year, LEAP implemented six literacy residencies, serving approximately 500 students across New York City public schools. Programs were delivered both during the school day—through partnerships with classroom teachers—and in afterschool settings, expanding access and reinforcing learning in multiple environments.
Educators observed notable improvements in:
Vocabulary development
Reading comprehension
Written and verbal expression
Student engagement and participation
These outcomes reflect the effectiveness of integrating the arts into academic instruction to support both skill development and student motivation.
🌍 Strengthening Communication and Expression
A key strength of the LEAP model is its emphasis on communication and self-expression.
In one residency, students designed and presented a culminating event inspired by their local communities, taking on leadership roles and demonstrating strong presentation skills. In another, students collaborated to write and perform an original play, applying literacy concepts in a creative and highly engaging format.
These experiences contribute to increased confidence, stronger public speaking abilities, and a deeper connection to the learning process.
📖 Expanding Access to Meaningful Literature
As part of its continued growth, LEAP expanded its Literacy Library with 59 additional titles selected to support curriculum goals and enhance student engagement. These materials provide varied perspectives and contexts, allowing students to connect more deeply with the content and strengthen comprehension.
Participation in broader literacy networks has also supported ongoing curriculum development, ensuring alignment with best practices in vocabulary instruction, mindfulness, and inclusive teaching strategies.
💡 Adapting and Strengthening Program Delivery
Throughout the year, LEAP navigated challenges related to staffing and scheduling. Through strategic adjustments—including targeted coaching and flexible program implementation—the organization maintained program quality and continuity.
These experiences underscored the importance of continued investment in Teaching Artist training and professional development to sustain and scale program impact.
🚀 Looking Ahead
LEAP is well-positioned to build on this momentum. Future plans include:
Expanding programming into additional afterschool and middle school settings
Enhancing instructional strategies and training systems
Continuing to grow literacy resources to meet increasing demand
These efforts will ensure that the program remains responsive, effective, and accessible to more students across the city.
⭐ A Lasting Impact
Through its innovative approach, Learning Through an Expanded Arts Program, Inc. (LEAP) demonstrates that literacy development can be both rigorous and engaging.
By integrating the arts into instruction, students are not only building essential academic skills—they are developing confidence, strengthening communication, and actively participating in their own learning journey.
The result is a model that supports not just literacy proficiency, but a deeper, more enduring connection to learning.
